Thanos

Director, Writer and Activist

Margaret Thanos is an award-winning Cypriot-Australian director and writer, and the Andrew Cameron Fellow (artist in residence) at BELVOIR ST THEATRE. She is also the owner of arts-activism company QUEEN HADES PRODUCTIONS.

Margaret’s directing credits include the 5-star sell-out season of I HATE PEOPLE; OR TIMON OF ATHENS(Sport for Jove), NOT NOW, NOT EVER: A PARLIAMENT OF WOMEN (25A), A VERY EXPENSIVE POISON (New Theatre), the Australian Premiere of LABYRINTH (Dream Plane Productions) and world premiere of A GRAIN OF SAND (KXT). 

She also has assistant directing credits on BENEFACTORS (Ensemble), MR BAILEY’S MINDER (Ensemble), THIS GENUINE MOMENT (Old 505), ANIMAL FARM (New Theatre), ORIGINATE PROJECT (Q Theatre), THE LINDEN SOLUTION (Ratcatch) and THE CHERRY ORCHARD (Chippen St). Her debut short LIFE BEYOND CHRISTINE is currently in post-production. In 2023, she was awarded the prestigious SANDRA BATES DIRECTOR’S AWARD at Ensemble Theatre. 

In 2020, Margaret was a part of Montague Basement's LABORATORY PROGRAM and in 2021 she was a part of ATYP's FRESH INK.

Margaret is also an activist, with a particular focus on gender equality and climate awareness. She is one of PLAN INTERNATIONAL's Advocates and has done extensive interviews and public appearances. Her production company QUEEN HADES PRODUCTIONS has had three sell-out seasons of its feminist sketch comedy show Tough Titties.

Margaret is currently the Andrew Cameron artist in residence at Belvoir St Theatre and will be the assistant director for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and August: Osage County later this year.
